# Why is Git Autocorrect too fast for Formula One drivers?

**[GitButler Blog](https://daily.dev/sources/gitbutler)** · 7 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Git's `help.autocorrect` setting has a quirky history: when set to `1`, it waits only 100 milliseconds before auto-running a corrected command — not enough time for even Formula One drivers to react. This stems from a 2008 design decision where Junio Hamano suggested using deciseconds as the unit, meaning `1` equals 0.1 seconds rather than acting as a boolean true. DHH's surprise at this behavior prompted the investigation. The post explains the full history, how the Levenshtein distance algorithm powers the command matching, and what values (`prompt`, `immediate`, numeric deciseconds) actually make sense to use. The author also submitted a patch to Git to treat `1` as `immediate` for a more intuitive experience.
