# Why Most Devs Stop Improving

**[CodeHead](https://daily.dev/sources/codehead)** · 4 min read · 20 upvotes · 7 comments

## Summary

Three habits that cause developers to stagnate are identified: refusing to leave a comfortable tech stack out of fear of feeling like a beginner again, mistaking tenure for expertise and calling old patterns 'experience', and over-relying on AI tools like Claude Code to the point of losing the ability to think independently. Research suggests heavy AI assistance correlates with worse performance when the tool is removed, because productive struggle is where real learning happens. The post encourages breaking out of comfort zones by trying avoided tools and solving problems without AI first. The video is sponsored by Tracer, an open-source coordination layer for AI coding tools.

> People have an internal mindset which dictates for every skillset what is the "ceiling" for them. Every person has their own depth to fill, for every skill, and most people don't wish to dig a deeper well if they are content with the amount of water the well currently produces for them.
