# Why Programmers Should Do Their Own Taxes

**[Atomic Spin](https://daily.dev/sources/atomicobject)** · 5 min read · 25 upvotes · 17 comments

## Summary

Programmers possess the exact skills needed for tax preparation: reading documentation, following logical workflows, and understanding conditional logic. Tax calculations work like if-else statements, and IRS documentation is comprehensive and well-structured. Most programmers have straightforward tax situations that don't require professional help, and doing your own taxes saves $300-1000 annually while building valuable financial knowledge.

> Hmm....let me think on this....On the one hand, I could probably save myself a couple of hundred dollars; on the other hand, I could get thrown in prison for tax evasion. Yeah, professionals should do professional work. And as a (notionally) professional coder, I know when to get someone smarter than me to do something. I'll continue to pay my yearly tithe to the corruption of our tax filing system for the foreseeable future. Because, as rough as life is, it could EASILY be worse.

> The fact that desktop versions of TurboTax install updates multiple times during the year to "ensure compliance with the latest tax laws" which can change month to month is enough for me to trust the people who spend all day every day ensuring compliance. Being a good programmer also means knowing what projects to **not** take on by yourself and this is a prime example of one.

> Uk developer here. I do my own taxes, but our system is considerably less complex than the mess in the US. You should actually be pressuring your elected representatives to stop making the tax system so complex. It's a crazy system of pork barrel carve out for special interests that penalise the majority for a tiny, but well-connected minority.
