# Why the Epstein Files are full of = signs

**[ThePrimeTime](https://daily.dev/sources/primeagen)** · 1 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Equal signs appearing in old emails are artifacts from quoted-printable encoding defined in RFC 2045 from 1996. This MIME encoding standard requires line breaks every 76 characters using an equal sign followed by carriage return and line feed. When email decoders fail to properly process these soft line breaks during their second pass, the equal signs remain visible in the text instead of being removed.
