# Why this year’s World Cup ball may not fly as far

**[MIT Technology Review](https://daily.dev/sources/technologyreview)** · 7 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Researchers who have studied World Cup soccer ball physics for 20 years have analyzed the new Adidas Trionda ball using wind-tunnel experiments at the University of Tsukuba. Their findings show the Trionda pushes the aerodynamic 'drag crisis' to the lowest speed since 2010 thanks to four panels with deep grooves, but its higher drag coefficient at fast speeds means long-distance kicks may travel a few meters shorter than with recent balls. The trade-off between surface roughness and high-speed drag is explained through comparisons to golf ball dimples and baseball stitching. Players have had months to adapt, and the ball's design is similar to Nike's Flight ball.
