Through the Wikimedia Enterprise product, these partnerships allow tech companies to gain structured access to Wikipedia’s vast repository of 65 million articles available in over 300 languages.
This initiative addresses the increased server costs incurred as AI companies commonly scrape Wikipedia’s free platform, offering a path towards more sustainable revenue for the non-profit organization. Traditionally, the foundation has been reliant on public donations, while its content is curated and maintained by a global community of around 250,000 volunteer editors.
These commercial partnerships not only ensure sustainable funding for the Wikimedia Foundation, but also coincide with Wikipedia’s 25th anniversary.
