# WindBorne’s AI beats the government’s weather forecasts. Making money from them is the harder problem

**[The Next Web](https://daily.dev/sources/tnw)** · 4 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

WindBorne Systems has raised a $37M Series B at a $250M valuation, co-led by Khosla Ventures and Galvanize, bringing total funding past $62M. The company operates a fleet of ~600 atmospheric balloons gathering weather data from locations satellites and ground stations can't reach. This data feeds WeatherMesh, its AI forecasting model that now tops public benchmarks, outperforming both leading AI systems and traditional government physics-based models while using less compute. Current customers include the US National Weather Service, Air Force, and Navy, with data already integrated into NOAA's Global Forecast System. The commercial growth bet targets private-sector buyers — trading firms, investment funds, and weather-sensitive industries — using the new capital to expand compute, build a mesh radio network, and deploy ocean buoys. The core challenge: monetizing sensing data for businesses has historically been difficult, with most earth-observation startups retreating to government contracts. WindBorne's thesis is that AI lowers the integration cost enough to make private-sector weather intelligence commercially viable.
