# WordPress vs the world

## Summary

The 'WordPress vs the world' framing is a false dichotomy. While AI has made stack migrations cheaper for technical tasks like porting templates and writing import scripts, it hasn't reduced the cost of replicating WordPress's editorial surface: the admin UI, plugin workflows, roles, revisions, and organizational habits. The real distinction in 2026 is between bundled editorial workflows (WordPress) and assembled ones (raw Astro, headless CMS setups). The key question for any project is how much publishing infrastructure to buy versus build, and how reversible that choice is.

## Content

WordPress still gets framed as “WordPress vs the world,” but that frame is misleading. AI made much of stack migration cheaper: porting templates, translating ACF structures, writing import scripts, and moving small content sites in days instead of months.

But AI did not make the editorial surface cheap. WordPress is sticky because of the admin UI people know, plugin workflows, roles, revisions, media, previews, client habits, retainers, and organizational memory. That is the part teams underestimate.

The real split in 2026 is not WordPress vs modern stacks. It is bundled editorial workflow vs assembled editorial workflow.

WordPress is one strong bundled answer; a raw Astro repo with Markdown sits near the assembled side; headless CMS setups can land between them.

The useful question is: how much publishing infrastructure should this project buy, how much should it build, and how reversible is the choice?
