Microsoft's new full-screen Xbox dashboard for Windows handhelds like the ROG Ally X looks like a console UI but is fundamentally just an overlay on top of Windows 11. The Desktop Window Manager (DWM) keeps running underneath, causing stutters, resolution scaling issues, UAC prompts, and broken sleep/wake behavior. SteamOS outperforms it because it's a purpose-built OS that treats the display as a raw frame buffer rather than a desktop window. Some workarounds exist — enabling Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling and aggressive Focus Assist — but they can't fix the architectural limitations. The conclusion is that Microsoft's approach is cosmetic, while Valve's is structural.
