Most people don’t know (or care) about their operating system. They don’t even know what OS means. They just want to buy a Steam Deck and have their games working.
For decades, Desktop Linux was only popular among a small niche of people who took operating systems pretty seriously.
Recently though, a couple of factors have somehow pushed Linux discussions into the mainstream since last year.
These factors include Windows getting worse for us all, PewDiePie emerging as an open-source prophet and governments talking more about digital sovereignty.
Suddenly Linux is not just a secret among the nerds but for anyone to be involved in and tinker with.
It shocks people to know that Linux is built and maintained by thousands of open-source developers and many small companies who have no interest in stealing our data or attention through ads.
Nerds like me have been talking about ‘Year of the Linux Desktop’ for decades now.
What started out as a meme though is turning into a fun reality. Valve, Codeweavers and hundreds of open-source developers have been busy making Linux great for all of us.
And the upcoming hardware like the Steam Machine and Steam Frame headset are only adding to my excitement.
