# Kubernetes RBAC Explained by Breaking It: Practice Roles and Bindings in Your Browser

**[DevOps Daily](https://daily.dev/sources/devopsdaily)** · [@bobbyiliev](https://daily.dev/bobbyiliev) · 74 upvotes · 4 comments

## Summary

A free browser-based simulator teaches Kubernetes RBAC by walking through seven scenarios where roles and bindings are deliberately broken, revealing why a ClusterRole bound with a RoleBinding stays namespace-scoped, why nodes can never be granted through a namespaced binding, why a typo'd roleRef fails silently, and how permissions like listing Secrets, creating Pods, or using escalate/bind/impersonate verbs can grant far more access than intended. Includes matching kubectl auth can-i commands verified against a real v1.37.1 cluster, plus three escalation paths worth checking in every RBAC review.

> One thing I'd pay extra attention to in a real cluster is who can create Jobs or Pods, not just who can read Secrets.

If the workload spec isn't properly constrained, someone could submit a Job using a more privileged ServiceAccount and mount Secrets that belong to other workloads in that namespace. They never needed direct `get secrets` permission to create a serious security problem.
