Yoshua Bengio, Turing Award winner and AI pioneer, has renewed warnings that hyperintelligent AI systems could develop autonomous preservation goals and pose an existential threat to humanity within a decade. He argues the industry's rapid push toward agentic AI — systems that can act independently — is converting theoretical risks into practical ones, while governance and oversight lag far behind.
