# Your 500 Mbps internet can feel worse than 100 Mbps, and the reason is not what you think

## Summary

High bandwidth internet plans don't guarantee low latency. Bufferbloat — caused by oversized router buffers that queue packets instead of signaling devices to slow down — can make a 500 Mbps connection feel worse than a properly tuned 100 Mbps one. The fix is Smart Queue Management (SQM), implemented via CAKE or FQ-CoDEL algorithms, which creates per-stream sub-queues to prevent bulk traffic from starving interactive traffic. SQM is absent from most ISP-provided and consumer routers; prosumer hardware (Ubiquiti, MikroTik) or custom firmware like OpenWrt is typically required. When enabling SQM, set speeds to 85–90% of tested values to keep queue management on the router side. Waveform's Bufferbloat Test can diagnose the problem by comparing idle vs. loaded latency.
