Your GPU is kinda lying to you and you probably don't know.

If you've played a modern game recently, whether on a PC, a PS5 Pro, or even a handheld, there's a good chance the image you're looking at was never fully rendered by your hardware.

Some of those pixels were probably created by AI.

Technologies like NVIDIA's DLSS and AMD's FSR have quietly become the backbone of modern gaming. They're the reason games can claim 4K visuals without actually rendering every frame at 4K.

Because of upscaling, your GPU does less work as AI fills in the blanks. And somehow the result is usually the same to an average gamer for most games.

Today upscaling is standard practice across the gaming industry. There is a reason why Steam Machine specifically mentions the use of upscaling tech to achieve the 4k 60 FPS.

Upscaling is useful to get more life out of your aging gaming hardware.

My own graphics card is an AMD R9 290 from 2013. By all accounts it should have been retired years ago. Yet thanks to FSR, I can still play games that launched years after the card itself.

Like any other technology though, upscaling technology has its drawbacks too. People feel upscaling takes away the authenticity of the game and makes developers lazy.

This is the reason why reccent DLSS 5 reveal got quite a lot of backlash.

For us gamers, the better these technologies get, the harder it becomes to tell what is actually being rendered and what is being invented.
