# Your iPhone is about to get a massive upgrade

**[TechCentral](https://daily.dev/sources/techcentral)** · 6 min read · 15 upvotes · 4 comments

## Summary

Apple's rebuilt Siri, branded Siri AI, is set to launch on iPhones next month after two years of delays, running on new Apple Foundation Models built in collaboration with Google's Gemini. It adds personal context understanding (searching messages, email, photos, notes on-device), on-screen awareness, and action-taking via the App Intents framework, plus a Foundation Models framework letting developers call Apple's or third-party models like Claude and Gemini. Siri AI requires iPhone 15 Pro or later, with the most advanced on-device model needing 12GB of unified memory (iPhone Air/17 Pro models). South Africa is included in the initial English-language rollout alongside the US, UK, Canada, Australia and others, though EU availability may be delayed due to Digital Markets Act concerns.

## Questions this post answers

### Which iPhone models support the new Siri AI assistant in iOS 27?

Siri AI works on iPhone 16 models or later, plus the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, even though iOS 27 itself runs on iPhone 11 and later. The most advanced on-device model, which powers the expressive voices and improved dictation, requires 12GB of unified memory, meaning it currently only runs on the iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

### Is South Africa getting Apple's new Siri AI at launch?

Yes, South Africa is included on the initial English-language list for Siri AI, alongside Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore and the UK. South African users also avoid the Digital Markets Act complications that may delay or block Siri AI on iPhones and iPads in the European Union at launch.

### Did Apple build its new Siri AI models entirely in-house or with outside help?

Apple's next-generation Apple Foundation Models, which power Siri AI, were custom-built in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models, according to Apple's own developer announcement. Apple kept control of the device, app interfaces, personal index and privacy layer while buying in model capability, and its Foundation Models framework also lets developers call Claude and Gemini through a new language model protocol.

> While this is a good thing across the board for iPhone users, I cannot help but feel bitter that this is what we were promised years ago starting with the iPhone 16 and we're only just now getting it. To top it off it's not even Apple's work- It's Gemini with a different name.

> There are definitely some interesting upgrades coming, especially around AI. I’m more interested in seeing which features actually become part of everyday use instead of something you try once and forget about. That’s usually where you find out whether an upgrade was really as big as it sounded.
