# Your motherboard has a fan header that does more than spin fans, and I ignored it for years

## Summary

Motherboard CPU_FAN headers do more than supply power — they send PWM signals to control fan speed and receive tachometer signals reporting actual RPM back to the board. Leaving the header empty (common with AIO setups using external hubs) can prevent the system from POSTing. The adjacent AIO_PUMP/W_PUMP header looks identical but runs at full speed constantly, so plugging a case fan into it sacrifices PWM control. Splitter cables let multiple fans share one PWM signal, though only one fan reports RPM. Powered hubs are preferable for multi-fan setups as they draw power from the PSU. Understanding these headers unlocks proper fan curve management, useful for overclocking or undervolting scenarios.
