# Your Nix Deployment Looks Clean. It Probably Isn’t.

## Summary

Standard vulnerability scanners fail to detect security issues in Nix-based deployments because no major vulnerability database indexes against Nix package URLs. This creates a false sense of security: scanners either return near-zero results or flood teams with false positives from CPE fallback matching. The core insight is that Nix packages are wrappers around upstream ecosystem artifacts — Python, Go, npm, C libraries — and their build recipes contain enough metadata to reconstruct valid ecosystem-specific package URLs. Manifest's engineering team built a pipeline that parses nixpkgs build recipes to identify upstream ecosystems and generate accurate package URLs that vulnerability databases can actually match against. Early results show successful reconstruction for roughly 50% of packages, turning a previously invisible attack surface into actionable, low-noise vulnerability findings.
