## Summary

Explains Jakob's Law, the UX principle that users prefer interfaces to behave like the ones they already know from other sites. Familiar patterns for search, navigation, product pages, carts, and checkout reduce cognitive friction, letting designers apply branding and unique touches without breaking learned expectations. Ends by asking readers which UX principle to cover next.

Day 04: UIUX Psychology - Jakob's Law

![jakobs law.jpg](https://media.daily.dev/image/upload/s--ywd9q8eB--/f_auto/v1790735440/ugc/content_5df5fa74-14de-4ff0-afdc-ba00720ffce9?_a=BAMAMicg0)

Think about the last time you opened a new website.

You probably didn't read a manual.

You already knew where to look for search, navigation, buttons, menus, profiles, and checkout.

Why?

Because you've used hundreds of interfaces before.

That's the idea behind Jakob's Law:

- Users prefer your website to work the same way as the websites they already know.
- This doesn't mean every product should look identical.
- It means familiar interaction patterns reduce the amount of thinking users need to do.

But users still expect familiar things:

→ Search somewhere easy to find

→ Navigation that behaves predictably

→ Products that open when clicked

→ A cart they can recognize

→ A checkout flow that makes sense

When designers change familiar interactions without a clear reason, users have to stop and figure out how the interface works.

And that's unnecessary friction.

Good UX doesn't make users learn the interface.

It lets them bring what they already know.

Then you use design, branding, and thoughtful interactions to make the experience your own.

Familiarity reduces friction.

Consistency builds confidence.

That's the power of Jakob's Law.

Which UI/UX principle should I break down next?

> Agreed. A website or app without good UX will struggle to gain traction, retain users, and ultimately generate revenue.

> Interesting. I can understand the fact that the user doesn't want to have a lot of cognitive strain. There are only a few objections to this law: How are you going to innovate if everything "has" to look the same? Have you considered the fact that the user most of the time doesn't know what it needs? Sometimes difficulty is the best way of finding a new better comfort

> If basic navigation needs onboarding, the interface already lost.
