# Your Windows 11 SSD just lost up to 50GB to a new feature you've never heard of — and that's a good thing

## Summary

Windows 11 version 24H2 introduces Point-in-time Restore, a new recovery feature that automatically enables itself and reserves up to 2% of your system drive (capped at 50GB) for rolling system snapshots. Unlike the older System Restore, it captures not just Windows files and drivers but also installed apps, settings, and personal documents. Snapshots are retained for up to 72 hours using Volume Shadow Copy technology, storing only changed blocks rather than full drive copies. Drives under 200GB are excluded entirely. The feature can be disabled via Settings → System → Recovery, which also clears any stored snapshots immediately.
