Adding too many cheap Zigbee repeaters can actually destabilize your mesh network rather than strengthen it. Chatty, low-quality smart plugs flood the limited 250Kbps Zigbee bandwidth with broadcast packets, causing collisions, latency, and dropped devices. Smart bulbs acting as repeaters are especially problematic when physically switched off, triggering costly rerouting loops for battery-powered sensors. The fix involves auditing your network topology in Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA, removing roughly half of cheap unbranded plugs, keeping one quality repeater per room every 15–20 feet, and binding end devices directly to their nearest designated repeater rather than letting them route freely.
