# Zink: Fall Update

**[Collabora Blog](https://daily.dev/sources/collabora)** · 4 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Erik Faye-Lund provides a fall 2019 update on Zink, the OpenGL-on-Vulkan implementation for Mesa. Zink currently supports OpenGL 2.1 and OpenGL ES 2.0, with no plans to advance to 3.0 until it is upstreamed. The main focus is the upstreaming effort: several preparatory merge requests have already been merged, and a final 163-commit merge request adds the driver itself. Once merged, Zink will be part of Mesa but not built by default — users can enable it via the `-Dgallium-drivers` meson option. CI integration is in progress, with testing not yet enabled. After upstreaming, maintenance will follow standard Mesa driver practices, reducing single-maintainer bus-factor. Future plans include working on OpenGL 3.x and 4.x features.

## Questions this post answers

### What OpenGL version does Zink support and when will it support OpenGL 3.0?

Zink supports OpenGL 2.1 and OpenGL ES 2.0. There are no immediate plans to work on OpenGL 3.0 or OpenGL ES 3.0 until Zink is upstreamed into Mesa. After upstreaming, work on OpenGL 3.x and 4.x level features is planned.

_Developers following Mesa graphics driver progress track milestones like these on daily.dev._

### How do I enable Zink in a Mesa build?

Zink is not built by default in Mesa. To enable it, add `zink` to the `-Dgallium-drivers` meson option when configuring the Mesa build. This applies once the upstreaming merge request (163 commits) is merged into the main Mesa repository.
