# Zuzai, a new word, indicates the absence of AI

**[Lobsters](https://daily.dev/sources/lobsters)** · 14 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A blog post proposes 'zuzai' (Zero Uses of AI, or similar) as a new word to describe things made without artificial intelligence. The author, a language enthusiast without formal linguistics training, argues existing terms like 'AI-free,' 'human-made,' 'traditional,' and 'organic' all fall short of covering the full range of AI-free outputs. The piece draws comparisons to how 'vegan' gained traction, surveys alternatives in other languages, lists rejected candidate words, and acknowledges that wide adoption of any coined term is unlikely to succeed just because someone proposes it.

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 2 discussions and 22 comments across lobsters, hackernews (as of 2026-09-01).

**TL;DR:** Most commenters are skeptical the coined term 'zuzai' will catch on, criticizing the recursive acronym as clunky and self-defeating since it embeds 'AI' itself, while a few find the underlying single-word-vs-negation idea reasonable.

**Sentiment:** 15% positive · 25% mixed · 60% skeptical

**The case for**

- A single word describing what something is can be catchier and more effective than multi-word negations.
- The lowercase 'ai' pronunciation is meaningfully distinct from 'AI' as a compound, giving it some phonetic identity.

**The pushback**

- The word is essentially a recursive acronym that still contains 'AI', undermining its own premise.
- It's not built from familiar prefixes like 'non-', so people must learn/expand the acronym to understand it.
- The definition of 'AI' itself keeps shifting, so a word defined against today's meaning may become meaningless later.
- It happens to be a typo of a common Polish name, hurting discoverability.
- Existing concepts like 'handmade'/'handcrafted' or borrowed foreign words (e.g. 'ekte', 'echt') already convey similar authenticity without needing a new coinage.
- A clean distinction between AI-generated code versus AI-generated creative content is missing from the proposal.

**By community**

- lobsters (skeptical): Many find the recursive acronym gimmicky and unlikely to catch on, though a handful like the single-word framing and offer alternative coinages.
- hackernews (skeptical): Limited but critical discussion arguing the term doesn't actually solve the labeling problem it claims to address.

**Hottest debate:** Whether a single invented word is inherently more useful than existing negation-based phrases like 'AI-free', or whether 'zuzai' just repackages the same problem.

**Open questions**

- How should the term handle AI used deep in tooling/infrastructure versus AI used directly to generate the visible output?
- What happens to the word's meaning if the definition of 'AI' changes significantly in a few years?
- Should there be separate terms for AI-free code versus AI-free creative content?

**Highlights**

> > Why "AI-Free," "no-AI," "non-AI," and "not by AI" are lacking something > > Would the market for organic food be the behemoth that it is if the choice of label had been something like "synthetic pesticide-free"? And the solution to that is using a word that's actually the acronym of a much longer sentence... that also has AI in it? > Zuzai uses zero artificial intelligence

> I have strong doubts that a recursive acronym is going to catch on with a general audience. Worse yet, it's not built from common parts like "non-", so you must expand the acronym to understand it.

> Neat, but also, it's a typo of the Polish first name Zuzia. It can't possibly help with discoverability.

> I think a variant of handmade or handcrafted would work better; the exact meaning of "handcrafted" changes as the tool stack automates more routine stuff but the intent is usually clear. a more pressing issue is the code vs content distinction - I really don't care if someone's video game engine or blogging software uses AI code, but I do care if the game assets or blog posts are AI generated. I would like to see something that makes this dichotomy clearer. (as for why I hold this stance - I don't particularly value originality in code. if I come up with a nice way of doing something I am happy for other projects to copy it, and vice versa.)

> How does "zuzai uses zero AI" fix the organic vs pesticide free metric? The only difference between it and "AI-Free," "no-AI," "non-AI," and "not by AI" is that you're using more words to say exactly the same thing. 'zai' -. "zero AI" would be precisely the same. Author has pointed out an issue that the phrase carries just as much as "pesticide free" would in their own estimation, and simply jazz hands away the fact that the proposal is susceptible to exactly said critique. AND, I'd argue that both 'pesticide-free' and 'zero-AI' are better specifically because they draw attention to the issues caused by pesticides and AI.
