Rust is the future of Linux
Greg Kroah-Hartman, the Linux kernel stable branch maintainer, has publicly endorsed Rust as the future of the Linux kernel. The core argument is not just memory safety, but that Rust's compile-time enforcement of data validation, memory lifetimes, locking rules, and error handling reduces the burden on the kernel's \~150 maintainers who review code from \~5,000 contributors. Greg claims 80% of Linux security vulnerabilities would have been impossible if the code were written in Rust. The current strategy is to write new components and drivers in Rust while keeping existing battle-tested C code intact. There are currently about 113,000 lines of Rust in the kernel. The recommendation for aspiring kernel developers is to learn enough C to understand the existing codebase and enough Rust to contribute to new components.

The Linux gaming distro that refused to join the Open Gaming Collective is now dominating the Steam charts
CachyOS, a rolling-release Arch-based Linux distro, declined to join the Open Gaming Collective (OGC) when it launched, citing concerns about bureaucratic overhead, association with Web3-linked Playtron, and the rushed circumstances around Bazzite's involvement. Founder Peter Jung argued that CachyOS already collaborated with OGC members informally and that the OGC's upstream-first policy means improvements flow to all distros anyway. Six months later, CachyOS ranks second in Valve's Steam Hardware Survey at 14.31% of Linux Steam users, behind only SteamOS at 22.24%, and ahead of OGC members Bazzite (7.73%) and Nobara (1.65%). Notably, CachyOS doesn't even market itself as a gaming distro — its primary focus is high performance and Arch's rolling release model.

Ubuntu's fastest-growing user base might be on Windows, not Linux
Ubuntu installs via Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) are reportedly growing faster than native Ubuntu desktop installs, according to a Canonical representative. Developers stuck with corporate Windows laptops are using WSL to get a Linux environment for backend, ML, and AI work without dual-booting or fighting IT policy. The piece frames this as Windows quietly becoming a host for Linux development rather than desktop Linux replacing Windows outright, echoing a comment from Gergely Orosz.

Omarchy 4.0: Beautiful, Opinionated, and Almost There
A Fedora user who tried Omarchy 4.0 out of curiosity shares impressions after daily use. The Hyprland-based, keyboard-first design and Quickshell integration feel intentional and polished, but a couple of rough edges stood out: disabling the laptop display while using an external monitor and then unplugging it can leave the laptop without a display until the next login, and turning off Bluetooth from the UI can make the Bluetooth widget disappear. Despite these quirks, the author now sees Omarchy as something they could genuinely use daily, though Fedora remains their main driver for now.

COSMIC is doing what GNOME still can't, and it's only been out for a year
COSMIC, the Rust-built desktop environment from System76, has made impressive progress in under a year since its first stable release in December 2025\. Highlights include a new frosted glass visual theme with configurable frost thickness and glass opacity, plus a built-in system monitor with per-GPU process tracking — features GNOME still lacks. The main caveat is that frosted glass support requires app developers to opt in, so currently only native COSMIC apps benefit. Despite being very new, COSMIC is already outpacing GNOME in customization and system monitoring capabilities.

GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
An opinion piece argues that GUI applications should be fully keyboard-driven, pushing back on a common Hacker News argument that TUIs are inherently superior because they're keyboard-first. The author contends there's nothing stopping GUIs from being just as keyboard-navigable, citing GNOME's Human Interface Guidelines which mandate every action be keyboard-accessible. The author applied this principle to their own GUI app, Klisi, and concludes that full keyboard support is a matter of developer effort, not technical feasibility.

China moves to Linux, WSL beats native installs, Potato gaming PCs are fixed - Linux Weekly News
A weekly Linux and open source roundup covers China's government-wide shift from Windows 10 China Government Edition to a domestic Linux distribution (likely Kylin OS or UnionTech OS) as digital sovereignty policy. Canonical reports WSL Ubuntu installs growing faster than native desktop installs, driven partly by AI/ML developers stuck on Windows at work. A Valve contractor's kernel VRAM management fixes aim to stop games crashing on low-VRAM GPUs, already live in SteamOS and potentially landing in Linux kernel 7.3\. Google and Apple face renewed scrutiny over app store malicious compliance (third-party store visibility, payment commission fees). GNOME 51 beta, GIMP 3.4's new zipped-XML file format and improved PSD support, Canonical-funded C-to-Rust translation research, Orion browser beta for Linux, and new XWayland/X.org releases round out the news, alongside Pine64 halting Linux hardware production due to soaring RAM/storage prices linked to AI demand.

Linux is better than ever, but I am not leaving Windows just yet
A long-time Windows user reflects on why they haven't switched to Linux despite acknowledging its significant improvements. Key reasons include Windows' superior app compatibility, more familiar user experience, and the hassle of choosing a Linux distribution. The author appreciates Linux's privacy benefits and customizability but finds the switching cost too high when Windows still meets their needs. They leave open the possibility of switching in the future if Windows becomes frustrating enough.

After Nearly a Decade of Distro Hopping, I Realized It Was Never About the Distro
A nearly decade-long personal journey through Linux distributions reveals that distro choice matters far less than the desktop environment running on top. Starting with Linux Mint Cinnamon in 2017, the author moved through Ubuntu (GNOME felt sluggish on old hardware), Kali Linux (lighter desktop, familiar APT), a failed Arch attempt, years on EndeavourOS including initramfs crashes and keyring issues, a stint with AntiX Linux and its anti-systemd philosophy, and back to Kali for bug bounty work. XFCE consistently outperformed GNOME and KDE on modest hardware. The author is now transitioning from XFCE to tiling window managers, settling on Mango WM for its plain-text configuration model. The core lesson: before picking a distro, ask which desktop environment it ships and whether that matches your hardware and workflow.

Valve just made your old PC a Steam Machine for free
SteamOS 3.8 now installs on regular desktop PCs, not just the Steam Deck, letting users turn an existing machine into a couch-friendly gaming console with an Arch Linux base and KDE Plasma for desktop tasks. Setup involves flashing a 16GB drive and running an installer with a few prompts. The major limitation is official support only for AMD GPUs, leaving Nvidia owners without support; the community distro Bazzite fills that gap. Reaction has been mixed, with many questioning why anyone would buy Valve's $1,049 Steam Machine hardware when this software works on hardware they already own.

5 Linux Concepts Every Developer Should Know
A beginner-to-intermediate overview of five core Linux concepts every developer should understand: the virtual file system and its 'everything is a file' philosophy (/dev, /proc, /sys), the process lifecycle (fork, exec, signals, zombie/orphan processes), file descriptors and standard streams, Linux permissions and ownership (chmod, least-privilege principles), and how containers work under the hood via namespaces and cgroups. Understanding these concepts helps developers write code that aligns with how production Linux servers actually operate.

The coolest thing I have ever done with coding agents...
A creator demonstrates forking Shotcut, an open-source C++ video editor, and using Claude Code to add custom keyboard shortcuts for jumping between audio segments and silences without knowing modern C++. The AI agent also helped build an Arch Linux package (ZST) and outlined the process to publish it to the AUR. The broader point: coding agents let anyone customize open-source software they use daily (Shotcut, OBS, KeePass, MyPaint) by describing desired features in plain language, turning open source into something continuously personalizable, not just free.

Linux has better Windows game compatibility at this stage than Windows does, and Proton is why
Proton, Valve's Steam compatibility layer built on Wine and DXVK, has reached a point where Linux often runs Windows games better than Windows itself does. Older titles like Fallout: New Vegas, KOTOR, and Morrowind run more reliably on Linux via Proton because it preserves the original behavior games expect and translates it to modern APIs, rather than replacing underlying systems as Windows does. Over 30,000 games are supported through Proton, with nearly 10,000 verified playable on Steam Deck. GOG is also developing an official Linux client, expanding the classic game library available on Linux. While Proton isn't universally superior, it excels especially for retro and classic gaming.

Why open formats matter for preserving what you can’t replace
Open formats and self-hosted tools are essential for preserving digital memories and documents against vendor lock-in and format obsolescence. LibreOffice can open dozens of legacy formats dating back to the 1980s and 90s, including Microsoft Works, ClarisWorks, and WordPerfect. Open video formats like Matroska, WebM, and Ogg ensure long-term video accessibility. Self-hosted cloud solutions like Nextcloud and ownCloud provide privacy-respecting alternatives to Google Drive and OneDrive, giving individuals and organizations full control over their data without recurring per-user fees.

Your executable is a SQLite database
A prototype called SELF (Structured Executable & Linkable Format) replaces the ELF binary format with an actual SQLite database file: the executable itself is a .sqlite file, queryable and modifiable via SQL. The author frames ELF as a hand-rolled database (string tables as interning, hash sections as indexes, section headers as a schema table) and shows how stripping symbols becomes a DELETE+VACUUM transaction, patching becomes an UPDATE, and ldd becomes a JOIN. Using binfmt\_misc and a custom interpreter (self-exec), SQLite-backed binaries run natively on NixOS. Dynamic linking is implemented two ways: via glibc's rtld-audit interface backed by SQL queries, and via a from-scratch SQL-based dynamic linker (self-ld). Benchmarks show a single stripped binary lands within 1% of ELF size, while packing an entire userland (723 executables, 400 libraries) into one database yields 611.9 MiB versus 644.4 MiB of separate ELF files, due to natural deduplication. Runtime overhead includes a fixed \~5ms SQLite startup cost and lack of shared mmap'd text pages between processes. The project and tooling (elf2self, self scan, self closure) are open source on GitHub.

Nitrux Shows Off a New Desktop Approach Other Distros Might Want to Take Note of
Nitrux has unveiled a new architecture called the Workspace Environment, a middle ground between minimal window managers and heavyweight desktop environments like GNOME or Plasma. It consists of four in-house QML/MauiKit components built on Hyprland: Valenz (a workspace bar), Marina (a dock), Workspace Settings (replacing KDE System Settings), and Desklock (a native lock screen derived from the QMLGreet codebase). Founder Uri Herrera replaced Waybar, SwayNC, Crystal Dock, and Hyprlock with these first-party tools to keep a consistent QML-based visual language and avoid depending on frameworks like Quickshell. This move also marks the end of the old Maui Shell project, whose GitHub repo has been archived. Valenz and Marina require the unreleased Nitrux 7.0.0, while the current stable release remains 6.1.0, so the components aren't usable yet.

We rebuilt the Linux microVM stack on Apple Silicon
Encore built crackling, a Rust daemon and CLI that boots the same OCI images as lightweight Linux microVMs on both Linux (via Firecracker) and macOS (via Apple's Virtualization.framework), replacing four years of a shared remote build server workflow. The write-up covers the old setup's pain points (SSH-based deploys, hand-built Docker bridges, manual image squashing), the design of a backend-agnostic MachineBackend trait, threading constraints around VZ's serial dispatch queue, unwrapping EFI zboot kernels, building an in-process OCI-to-initramfs pipeline without root or loop mounts, vsock-based guest agent communication, and why VZ's snapshot save silently fails due to a private entitlement Apple withholds from third parties.

Linus is so based for this
Linus Torvalds has publicly declared that Linux is not an anti-AI project, telling dissenters to fork it or walk away. This comes amid growing adoption of AI tools in the Linux kernel workflow, including Sashiko, an agentic AI code review system using Gemini that found 53.6% of bugs that had passed human review. Greg Kroah-Hartman noted a dramatic shift in AI-generated bug report quality — from junk to legitimate — seemingly overnight. The author draws a parallel between AI adoption and TypeScript adoption: both raise the floor for average developers while slightly constraining elite developers, and both faced initial resistance from top-tier engineers who didn't need the help. The broader argument is that AI tools for code review, testing, and validation are now clearly useful, and open source maintainers who ignore them risk being outpaced by malicious actors using the same tools offensively.

CachyOS's August 2026 media refresh introduces experimental server installation profiles in the CLI installer, laying groundwork for a future Server Edition. Several core components were rewritten in lower-level languages: the Shelly GUI package manager moved from C# to Zig (v3), gaining faster startup and lower memory usage along with new UI features; the Cachy-Update systray applet was ported from C++ to Rust and now runs on Arch-Update v4.x; and the chwd kernel-manager backend also moved from C++ to Rust. The graphical installer adds new greeter options for Hyprland and Cinnamon, while handheld detection and a DNS bug in the Welcome app were also fixed.

Rust std fs slower than Python!? No, it's hardware
A deep-dive investigation into why Rust's std::fs file reads appeared slower than Python on a specific machine. The author progressively eliminates software causes — PyO3 overhead, OpenDAL abstraction, memory allocators — using strace, eBPF, and perf profiling. The root cause turns out to be a hardware bug in AMD Zen 3 CPUs (Ryzen 5900X/5950X): the \`rep movsb\` instruction (used via FSRM — Fast Short REP MOV) performs significantly worse when the read buffer is page-aligned (offset 0x00–0x10 within a page). Python and jemalloc happened to allocate buffers at larger page offsets, accidentally avoiding the bug. A glibc fix disabling FSRM for Zen 3 was in progress. Switching to jemalloc in Rust is a practical workaround, not because jemalloc is faster, but because it allocates at a different page offset.

Linux's 10% market share spike is probably bots, but the Windows 10 story is real
StatCounter's June 2026 data shows Linux desktop share in North America jumping to 10.61%, a suspicious 7-point spike likely caused by bot traffic rather than real user migration. However, the underlying trend is genuine: Windows 10's end of support and expensive RAM are pushing users toward free alternatives. Microsoft is responding defensively by optimizing Windows 11 for 8GB RAM machines. The real metric to watch is whether Linux holds above 5-6% share over the next several quarters as Windows 10 hardware ages out.

This Solo Dev Already Built a Popular Distro. Now He's Trying It Again
stillOS is a maintenance-free Linux desktop built on AlmaLinux 10 with bootc handling atomic, image-based updates instead of traditional dnf package management. Created by Cameron Knauff (PizzaLovingNerd), who previously built risiOS before it was absorbed into Nobara Linux, stillOS features a Windows-11-like taskbar over GNOME, desktop icon support, and a suite of custom 'still' branded tools including stillTerminal, stillCenter (a curated app store with app compatibility ratings), and stillControl for GNOME layout customization. The review covers hands-on testing of version 10.2, noting a generous default app selection, active development, and automatic update checks every 24 hours, with a manual override via 'sudo bootc upgrade'.
