The Game Industry Hardship Fund bundle, a $10 itch.io collection of over 100 games, has raised more than $130,000 in five days — surpassing its initial $100,000 goal and now targeting $200,000. Organized by Necrosoft Games director Brandon Sheffield, the funds are distributed by the United Videogame Workers union to support laid-off game developers through two tiers: small grants under $1,000 and major expense grants up to $5,000. The initiative comes amid ongoing mass layoffs, including Lightspeed LA cutting 68 workers, Refactor Games being shuttered, and Double Fine laying off 23 staff after Microsoft's Xbox restructuring eliminated 3,200 roles.
