Epic Games has released Lore, a new MIT-licensed, open-source version control system designed specifically for game development workflows. Unlike Git (which struggles with large binary files) or Perforce (which is commercial and proprietary), Lore is built to handle arbitrary content types, multi-gigabyte binary files, sparse/lazy data fetching, fragment-level deduplication, and multi-tenant isolation โ€” all under a permissive open-source license. Originally developed as the VCS underlying UEFN (Unreal Editor for Fortnite), it is now publicly available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. The tool is pre-1.0 and under active development, but already has 3,500+ GitHub stars and one release (v0.8.3). A desktop GUI client and APIs for C, JavaScript, and Go are also available.
