The Awesome Defold Game Engine - Now in Glorious 3D!

Defold 1.12.4 has been released, and the game engine is now embracing 3D development. While Defold has always had some 3D capabilities, the latest updates unlock a full 3D editor camera and include a third-person 3D sample project. The engine uses Lua as its primary scripting language and follows a message-passing architecture. It supports a wide range of platforms including PlayStation 4/5, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, HTML5, and Xbox (coming soon). Defold is free and source-available (not fully OSI-certified open source), with frequent bi-weekly releases, solid documentation, and an active community. The 3D feature set is still maturing — notably, only baked animations are supported for 3D models, not bone animations.
