Jos Dehaes has announced YSERVER, a new X11 server written from scratch in Rust with assistance from Claude Code AI. Unlike a direct Xorg replacement, it targets modern Linux use cases by dropping legacy features like multiple screens, non-TrueColor visuals, indirect GLX, and the DDX driver ABI. It already supports running full MATE, Xfce, and Cinnamon desktop environments, along with key X11 extensions including RandR, DRI3, GLX, MIT-SHM, and Composite. The project is open-source under the MIT license.
